TERREMOTO DI SICILIA E CALABRIA

AVVENUTO IL 28 DICEMBRE 1908

Vi voglio raccontare, o gente umana

il gran disastro che arsivò a Messina.

Non s'erà mai inteso cosa strana

che mare e terra andò tutto in rovina.

Lasciò nel mondo a tutti un gran dolor

gôlo che à parlarne ci dà rimorso al cor!

Più di settanmila poverini

restano tutti sotto nel disastro,

Le madri tutte con i loro bambini

scappando tutti da un paese all'altro

per quelle strade si sentiva gridar

oh! gran Dio del Ciel, veniteci, ad aiutar!

Il Re con la Regina son partiti

quando anno inteso quel gran disastro

al campo di Messina i feriti

facevan pietà nel di nefasto

Povere madri, famiglie intiere ancor

fra quelle macerie gridando dal dolor!

Infelice Italia bella mia,

Il gran dolor ti colse in un istante.

Di Calabria e la bella Sicilia

fu un cimitero rimasto per sempre

che per destino la terra si spezzò

la città di Messina cosi si sprofondo?

Quindi le notizie da quei luoghi

ci portò a tatti noi un gran dolore

che son di due cento mila morti

rimasti poveretti in quell'orrore

Povera gente! Giorno di Crudeltà

fra mezzo a macerie facevan pietà!

Ed il 28 di Dicembre scorso

il terremoto cominciò avvisare

la sere alle cinque sopra al corso

la gente si mise tutta a scappare

addio Messina, addio bella città

addio Reggio Calabria, di te si parlerà.

I want to tell you, oh human people

when they heard that great disaster

at the Messina camp the wounded

aroused pity in the dire day

Poor mothers, entire families still

among those ruins crying out in pain!

Unhappy my beautiful Italy,

The great pain struck you in an instant.

Of Calabria and beautiful Sicily

it was a cemetery that remained forever

that by fate the earth broke

the city of Messina thus sank?

brought us all a great pain
