Von Hamburg kommt es rasch daher gezogen
Es ist bestimmt nach Nordamerika
Bewohnt mit vielen lieben Menschenseelen
Gar Mancher der verläßt sein Vaterland
Und Niemand ahnet daß er sollte wählen
Den Tod des Meeres, oder Tod durch Brand [.]
So eben war die Mittagszeit verflossen
Da brach ein Schreckenselement sich Bahn
Ein Feuerschlund ist überall gegossen
Die Fahrt des Schiffes facht sehr rasch es an
Im langen starck bewohnten Zwischendecke
In hellen Strömen es zur Erde träuft
Wo Hab u. Gut bis in der kleinsten Ecke
An jeder Stätte waren angehäuft [.]
Rauchwolken bahnten überall sich Wege
un[d] Feuerglocken kreuzten rings umher
Und immer kräftger wird die Flamme rege
Ein Angstgeschrei ertönt verhängnißvoll
Der Macht des Element, des fesselfreien
Entrinnet eiligst Mann u. Weib u. Kind
Und an des kräftgen Seemanns Männerreihen
Ertönt der Officire Wort geschwind [.]
Doch ob im umsichtsvollen Augenmerke
Man Rath u. Hülfe leistet hier u. dort
Die übergroße Angst u. Menschenstärke
Bringt nicht ein Boot mit Vorsicht über Bord
Wie rasend füllen sich die kleinen Schalen
Der Mannschaft Schreien wird ganz überhört
Und wer entrinnt des Feuerschlundes Qualen
Wird von den wilden Wellen gleich verzehrt [.] |
Das Element kennt Zügel nicht u. Schranken
Das Angstgeschrei tönt weit hin übers Meer
Die starken Masten fangen an zu wanken
Kein rettend Schiff kommt in der Ferne her
Es bleibt die Wahl nur noch den Armen über
Des wilden Meeres oder Flammentod
Und viele wählen sich das erste lieber
Ihr letzt Gebet steigt auf zum ewgen Gott [.]
Ein Gatte segnet alle seine Lieben
Und stürzt sie sammt der Gattin in die Fluth
Den Säugling, der in seinem Arm geblieben
Drückt er ans Vaterherz mit Liebesgluth
Vertraut auf Gott, stürzt er sich mit dem Kleinen
Den schon vorangeschickten Lieben nach
Das Auge, welches nicht erstarrt, muß weinen
Und jeder Brust entquillt ein tiefes Ach!
Doch nein, ich lege meine Feder nieder
Wer kann beschreiben dieses Schreckensbild
Nur etwas dieses Schicksals geb ich wieder
Das Leidenmaß war nur erst halb gefüllet
Zwar Einige, die wurden noch gerettet
Durch braver edler Biedermänner Hand

A steamboat, whose name is Austria
